It is thought that the padlock had been broken off the focsle door and thrown over the side as it could not be found anywhere on the focsle. They were just petty thieves and there was no serious threat to the vessel or crew as they left the vessel as soon as they realised they had been detected.

The watch AB\'s were instructed to stop at the manifold each side and the general alarm was sounded. On sounding the alarm the intruders were seen to leave the vessel. 34) PERSONAS ABORDO Y NACIONALIDAD/POB AND NATIONALITY:
R --> n/a

35) BREVE DESCRIPCIÓN DE LOS HECHOS/BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ATTACK:
R --> The British Serenity was at anchor off Puerto La Cruz, in ballast with a forward draft of 6.5m, Security level 2 two men in the watch patrolling the deck and the cable washers on. At approx 2347LT (0417Z) 3 intruders were detected on the focsle, the OOW immediately called the Master. When the Master arrived on the bridge one person could be plainly seen on the focsle lowering something over the side, an attempt was made to blow the forward whistle to alert the intruders that they had been detected. The watch AB\'s were instructed to stop at the manifold each side and the general alarm was sounded. On sounding the alarm the intruders were seen to leave the vessel. On mustering, team one were sent forward to assess the situation they reported that Team two were sent around the after end of the vessel to check that all other external doors and padlocks remained in place and secure. It is thought that the intruders gained access via the focsle as at no time did they go to the maindeck. At no time was any boat seen either approaching or leaving the vessel so I believe that they must have approached from dead ahead and then climbed up to the focsle using a graple and rope or some such arrangement, leaving the same way.
